NAD   NAD Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide; a coenzyme for dehydrogenases; reduced form is NADH. Formerly called DPN (diphosphopyridine nucleotide), previously Coenzyme I
NADP   NADP Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate; a coenzyme for dehydrogenases; reduced form is NADPH. Formerly called TPN (triphosphopyridine nucleotide), previously Coenzyme II.
Nähragar   Nutrient Agar A specific composition of bacterial nutrients solidified with agar
Nährboden m, -s, -böden Nutrient medium, pl: media ‘Media’ is plural, but is sometimes used carelessly to mean ‘medium’.

Nebenprodukt   Byproduct  
Nephelometrie   Nephelometry Measurement of turbidity using light scattered at an angle to the incident beam; particularly sensitive at low turbidity.

Newton’sche Flussigkeit   Newtonian liquid (Not ‘Newton’s liquid’)
Newtonzahl   Newton’s number Power number
Nigrosin   Nigrosine A black stain (dye) which does not penetrate living cells; used for ‘negative staining’.
NIH   NIH (US) National Institutes of Health
Nitrifikation   Nitrification Conversion of ammonia to nitrite or nitrate
Normalpotential   Standard potential Potential (voltage) of a ‘Standard Hydrogen Electrode’ (SHE) (specified conditions); also used to mean the potential of certain other systems in relation to the standard hydrogen electrode.
Normschliffverbindung f Standard ground joint Normally a ground glass joint; often ‘standard taper’ in US
Numerisch apertur   Numerical aperture In optical microscopy, a value that is critical for resolving power
