Wärmetauscher   Heat exchanger
Wärmeüberträgimg f Heat transfer
Wasseraktivität   Water activity; aw Usually refers to foods; measured as the ratio of the vapor pressure of water over the sample to the vapor pressure of pure water at the same temperature. A measure of the concentration of ‘free’ (unbound) water. Most bacteria require aw > 0.85; some yeasts and molds grow at aw > 0.6.
Wasserdampfdruck   Water vapor pressure Partial pressure of water vapor in air at a given temperature
wasserdampfdurchlässig adj Permeable to water vapor
wasserfrei adj Anhydrous Describes certain chemicals, esp. those which can form hydrates
Wassermantel n Water jacket For temperature control

Wirbelschichtreaktor   Fluidized bed reactor; turbulent bed reactor Fluid flow keeps solid particles suspended. Some German authors consider that a ‘Wirbelschichtreaktor’ has very turbulent flow, while a ‘Fliessbetreaktor’ has plug flow.
Wirbelschichttrockner m Fluidized-bed drier
Wirtszelle   Host cell
Wundstarrkrampf   Tetanus; lockjaw Disease produced by Clostridium tetani in wounds with very inadequate blood circulation (oxygenation).
