Term Explanation
Bacto Tradename of Difco Laboratories, Detroit, MI, USA. Difco produces microbiological media and related materials.
Bacto A-1 medium Used for detecting fecal coliforms. Tryptone, lactose, NaCl, Salicin, Triton X-100; pH 6.9
BAGG broth Buffered Azide Glucose Glycerol broth. For growing fecal streptococci.
Balamuth medium Medium prepared by method reported by Balamuth, for culturing Entamoeba histolytica. Aqueous extract of egg yolk and liver.
BBL Baltimore Biological Laboratories: manufacturer of microbiological media
BCG Brom Cresol Green
BCP-D agar Brom Cresol Purple Desoxycholate agar For isolating Gram-negative enteric bacilli.
BCYE-alpha Medium for Legionella. Contains CYE, ACES buffer, and alpha-ketoglutarate.
Beer Generally, a fermented grain mash; also a beverage
BES N,N-bis[2-hydroxyethyl]-2-aminoethane-sulfonic acid; Buffer for pH range 6.4-7.8
BG Brilliant Green. Used in media for isolating Salmonella.
BGB Brilliant Green Bile  (agar, broth). For detection of coliforms.
BHI Brain Heart Infusion
Bicine N,N-bis[2-hydroxyethyl]glycine; Buffer for pH range 7.6-9.0
BIGGY Agar Growth medium with Bismuth sulfite, Glycine, Glucose and Yeast (Nickerson Agar). For isolating and culturing Candida species. Also BiGGY.
Bis-Tris bis[2-hydroxyethyl]-imino-tris[hydroxymethyl]methane; buffer for pH range 5.8-7.2
Bis-Tris propane 1,3-bis[tris-(hydroxymethyl)-methylamino]propane; buffer for pH range 6.3-9.5.
Blendor A device which homogenizes samples with a rotating blade running at very high speed; e. g., a Waring blendor.
Bordet Gengou agar Described by Bordet and Gengou, 1906; for cultivating Bordetella pertussis (pathogen of whooping cough)
Brain Heart CC agar Contains infusions of calf brains and beef hearts, peptone, destrose, NaCl, Na2HPO4, agar, chloramphenicol, and cycloheximide (Actidione ®). For culturing pathogenic fungi.
BSS Balanced Salt Solution
BTB Brom Thymol Blue. Used in media for isolating pathogenic streptococci.
Butt A culture tube in which an agar medium has solidified while the tube was held upright (vertical)
