Please remember that I translate

- only from German to English,

- only scientific/technical material,

- and especially material dealing with

          chemistry,

          pharmaceuticals,

          microbiology, and

          firearms and ammunition.

My translation covers text. I do not generally work with graphics, and normally present translations of German words that appear in figures as a list below space left for each figure.

An earlier draft of this page had details of how you can estimate my charge for a translation. I decided to leave all that out because the conclusion was this:

First, check my availability by e-mail or telephone. I take vacations and days off.

For new clients, and often for established clients, I must see the German document to make sure that I can translate it properly. When I have seen it, I will attempt to give you a firm price and delivery date within 24 hours. I may spend some of that time on a credit check. The price quote will be valid for at least 5 days. The delivery date will be valid for at least 24 hours (until the next business day, over weekends and US holidays).

I recommend that you send a copy of the document (keep the original!) as an e-mail attachment, by an express service, or by postal mail. [Fax will often do, but essential detail (fine print, subscripts, superscripts) may not be legible. If you send a fax, use the highest resolution available on your fax machine]. Be sure to include any figures or drawings! That is particularly important for patents. The figures and drawings are necessary to understand the text, even if they do not contain any words to be translated. If I do not feel that I can translate your document properly, if I cannot meet your requested delivery date, or if you do not accept the quote within 5 working days, I will shred my copy of the document. (Keep the original!)

The translation business generally accepts orders and acceptances by fax or e-mail as binding. Be sure to send any documents, purchase order numbers, or the like which you require for payment. Invoices are net 30 unless otherwise agreed.

The quote will be based on my estimate of the number of words; special requirements such as setting up and filling in extensive tables, and any other features which appear significant to me. Urgency is a major one of those features. The price will be substantially higher for rush work, and somewhat lower for extended delivery.

Be sure to include:

          your name / company name;

          your mail and e-mail address;

          your phone or fax number;

          information you require for the invoice;

          the date when you need the translation;

          any specifications on format (typeface and size, spacing, etc.);

          and any preferred terminology or phrasing.

If you need a notarized translator’s statement, be sure to specify that, and allow at least two extra days for notarization and delivery of hard copy by Federal Express. Expect a charge of $50 for the notary’s fee, the time needed for notarization, and delivery of the hard copy by Federal Express. See the section on "Certification". In the rare case in which certification by the German Consulate is required, there is a very substantial extra cost based on the time required.

Delivery: I normally deliver translations and invoices (Net 30) as e-mail attachments.

At your request, I can deliver by fax, Federal Express (extra charge), or postal mail.

Note that a "translator’s statement" will require shipment of a paper copy, with pages individually initialed.
